I am a teacher in a school that is 100% free breakfast and lunch. My students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of my students come from immigrant families from Africa, India, and Mexico. I also have students from Puerto Rico who have relocated due to the damage done by Hurricane Maria. These students have been through a lot, but it hasn't stopped their thirst for knowledge. Although most of my students' parents struggle with the English language, they are very involved in their children's education. My students work hard to make not just their parents proud but to make me proud.
My students want to explore and learn about the world around them.
They want to discover new ideas and places. They are compassionate children who enjoy reading and researching and talk of making the world a better place.
My Project
I am requesting an iPad and Kindle tablets for my students. The iPad will be used with educational apps like Dreambox for math, and Reading A-Z. Students will also be able to use the iPad to access their electronic portfolios, as well as their Google documents. The Kindle tablets and iPad will be used with our local library app so that students will be able to check out books. I have found that students are more willing to read on an electronic device. Because my students are English Language Learners, the more exposure they have to language, the more proficient they will become. The tablets and iPad are also easily portable, so students will be able to move around the classroom, and even take them outside to read or to work on projects.
The tablets I am requesting will be used to inspire my students.
The most important thing about this project is the possibilities it offers my students. Although my students are children of immigrants, most of them have never traveled far from home. These devices will open up the world to them through electronic literature and informational texts. It will allow my students to be mobile and work in groups, pairs, or independently wherever they want. It will allow them to upload their work to their electronic portfolios in order to keep the memories of their virtual trips alive.
