Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a counselor in a low-income, high-poverty school district, and my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of the students at our school have experienced trauma in their lives, have academic and behavioral challenges at school, and receive a free or reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."

When basic needs are not met, the children we work with cannot be present and learn how to be good students.

The counseling office provides an ear to listen, cozy chairs to relax in, and often snacks and friends!

We may not be able to control their home lives. However, we can certainly impact their experience during the school day.

My Project

Through a prior DonorsChoose.org project we successfully have two tables that are being used during recess, but we are finding that even more students want to be able to participate and with COVID having more space will keep students safer. Students have created drawings of things they are thankful for, played chess, and chatted in a dry space out of the rain.

Tables for creativity become a place to come together, to learn together, and to grow together.

They are a safe place for students who struggle during recess and want to find ways to connect. Additional tables will help create a larger space to support even more kids.
