I teach sixth grade English Language Arts to a great group of kids in Brooklyn, NY. I have an amazing group of kids who get so excited about the characters in the books we read that they shout their enthusiastic answers in class. I love that they are passionate about books and know this is my gift to give them, the love of reading.
We work everyday in groups, both big and small, to build each other up.
Maybe we're creating travel brochures for settings of our books or slideshow decks of Greek gods and goddesses. We may be devising arguments to encourage people to adopt pets instead of buying them from pet stores or writing scripts to create news stories to help other students understand the plight of endangered species.
My Project
We have a pretty small room for a lot of kids, some small some not so small. We have great tables for group work, but they are oversized for our room. Elbow room is at a premium and we are constantly knocking into each other.
Alas, if only there were a way to sit in groups and have enough room for personal space (always at a premium in NYC).
This 6 leaf table is the perfect size to fit into our classroom. We can fit 5 kids comfortably around it and in a pinch we can add one more kid. Since this table is solid surface, my kids will still be able to answer questions on chart paper, collaborate on computer coding activities, highlight details in test prep passages with partners, and ask Alexa to help with spelling and grammar for writing pieces. We also need an extra set of seats to replace the wobbly stools at our other tables.
