I used to think a switch was a stick used to punish children. But, in my class, switches are good things. My students are profoundly mentally disabled. Most are also severely physically disabled. I have 9 students in my class ranging in age from 3 to 21, and my class is located in a regular elementary school. The switches we use are electric or battery-operated devices that allow students to turn on toys or other equipment. Some switches play music or repeat phrases that adults record on the switch. The switches allow my students to be more independent with "work" skills and leisure activities. One switch my class needs is called a Powerlink 3. It is a piece of equipment that allows any electric toy or appliance to be operated with another switch. My students could use the Powerlink to turn on the radio or CD player. They could use it to assist with cooking activities like running the blender. They could also use it for job skills like turning on the paper shredder. The Powerlink would open the door to many more activities for even the most severely disabled students.
