Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sweet kiddos come from various home environments and several from low-income homes. They face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they may face, they rise. My students are on the pathway to receiving the Seal of Biliteracy. They spend half their day learning in Spanish and half in English. They use everything in their linguistic repertoire to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the world. I am looking to create a space where my students have the freedom to explore their identity, pursue their own learning, and understand the complexities of humanity, develop empathy, all the while, discovering their unlimited potentials.
Our motto is ¡juntos podemos - together we can!
We cheer each other on, encourage each other, and lift each other up. We even throw confetti to celebrate our perseverance and our successes. We believe in “The Power of YET!” and that education is a journey. In the past three years my students have faced more than most adults did when they were age of my students. My students have proven, no matter what obstacles they face, they rise and do not give up.
My Project
Scholars feel empowered when given choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows them to choose where and with whom they work. They are not rocks and therefore should never be expected to behave as such - stay where they are put. Children need to move.
Twist, spin, wobble, rock, bounce!
Physical activity increase oxygen flow to the brain keeping young minds more alert and focused. Movement is linked to higher academic performance. And it's just more fun.
A sense of community is created around shared flexible seating options in the classroom. It cultivates an awareness of others needs, builds trust, and sprouts empathy for peers.
