Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Bruins are spirited, talented and resilient. We are a high school with about 1,400 students in Louisiana. We have a diverse student body with students from all over the world, many new to our country and learning English for the first time.

On the announcements every day we are reminded, "Once a Bruin, always a Bruin because here, we are the difference." We have a unique environment where students are invested in our school and feel empowered to make a difference when they see a need.

We have a wide range of talents and interests across our campus: from students enrolled in our nursing or automotive programs to students leading the way for our district in Restorative Practices and Leadership classes, to students building and designing sets for our impressive Bruin Theater Alliance, to our many talented student-athletes that lead beyond the field and court.

My Project

The Restorative Center at our high school is the first and only student led program in our area, working to reduce the suspension rate and disrupting the school to prison pipeline. Our peer leaders are trained to facilitate conversations that build community, strengthen relationships, and repair harm when it occurs. This is powerful and difficult work. However, their dedication to our Bruin community does not stop there. Part of building a stronger community is ensuring that all members have their needs met, so the student leaders in our Restorative Center have decided to take on a new project, the Bear Necessities Shop. Our first round of donations came in November, and we have already begun supporting our students with shelf stable food items, hygiene necessities, winter clothing items and school supplies! We realized a need for more protein items and items that will allow students to cook a meal for a whole family.

Students are at their best when they have the food, clothing, personal care and school supplies they need, but not all of our families have access to these resources.

Over 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch at school which means that some families struggle with food insecurity and do not have always have access to meals in the evening, on weekends or breaks. We hope to reduce the stress that food insecurity has on our students, so they can focus on their educational goals.
