Supplies Needed to Support Differentiated Learning

My students need help in understanding written text. Having access to 5 Apple MP3 players, where students can download oral help while reading, will greatly enhance their learning.

My Students

Though my students are bright, funny and hardworking many times they feel like failures because their strengths are not in reading and writing. Reading the sections of a classroom textbook becomes painful. They want to learn, but need learning aides to strengthen their understanding in class.

My students come from a low to middle class background.

I have many students who do not qualify for Special Education, but need extra help in learning the basics. They work hard every day. We try to look at new material from a variety of teaching/learning styles. The biggest need amongst my students is reading skills. It is difficult to complete assignments in Social Studies if you can not read. Many of the students just need simple aides to help them better understand. Having an opportunity to listen to the text while reading it can make a world of difference to some students' comprehension. Most of my troubled readers learn better aurally and visually. Trying to differentiate the learning for my students requires me to work with groups of students while others work on their own. Having tools to help the students complete their work would boost student confidence and grades!

My Project

Having the access to MP3 players will allow me to record sections of reading material onto the computer. Students can then download the pod casts onto the players and listen and read the material on their own. I will be able to move about the room and help the students more on a one to one basis. Students who were absent no longer have to miss out on the material covered in class the day before.

Students who have struggled with book learning their whole life are accustomed to just giving up when assignments are handed out.

Having the mp3 players will allow for the students to better understand the text and the assignment instructions. When these students have success they are so happy they are giddy. It is a great thing to witness.
