This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in an elementary school in North Long Beach with nearly 1,000 students. At our school, ninety-two percent of students receive free lunch. Forty percent of our students are English language learners, and, in my classroom, that percentage rises to forty-eight percent. In my particular class, I have 35 students, of whom 17 are English Language learners. One student is mainstreaming from Special Education day class. They all have a wide range of learning needs and levels.

My students come to school with positive attitudes every day, ready and excited to learn.

They are motivated to do their best and to make the most of every opportunity put forth to them at school. It is my goal to provide them with as many engaging and enriching experiences as I can.

My Project

My students love to learn and are eager to participate in lessons each day at school! In order to help students build foundational knowledge in both ELA and math and to increase engagement, I want to give each of my students tools to help them better understand and participate in lessons.

The highlighters will be used to help students color code their notes.

This is a skill that will help them better comprehend their reading and improve their math and ELA notebooks. This can help them better organize concepts and lead to better understanding. Every week, we analyze a song and look figurative language, but it can get messy on their papers. I envision these highlighters helping students to organize their ideas for deeper understanding.

The dry erase markers will help me to check for understanding throughout lessons. The Play-Doh will be used to create visual models for math problems. As we study fractions, students can build Play-Doh models of their fractions to help better understand the concepts. The pencils, markers, erasers, and paper will be utilized to help students take notes and color code and organize their ideas.
