My students need plants, soil, and planting supplies to learn about reproduction and cloning and have hands-on experience taking care of plants and watching them grow.
My students are generally from low-income families who come to school not only as a place to learn, but as a place for escape and a place for new experiences. Students travel anywhere from five minutes to almost two hours to reach our school and are excited to spend time here. Many students live in subsidized housing or transient homes, using school as a place of solace.
Students at our school are passionate about learning and exploring not only the school curriculum, but also their personal interests like sports, acting, and art.
Exposing students to different methods of learning and topics is key to their development and our job as educators. Our students do their best to learn each and every day and take this information with them out into the world.
My Project
Students are studying plants and plant reproduction in the science curriculum and are going to extend their understanding by growing and taking care of the plants themselves! By the end of the year, students will each have their own large and healthy plant to take home with them as their new pets. Students will complete research throughout the year to see how the plants grow best and will be tracking these on their own websites.
Scientists will grow their own understanding of science, experiments, and plant reproduction while actually growing plants!
They need hands-on experience with growing and caring for plants to help develop their understanding of these topics and of personal responsibility. Students will be in charge of their own plants and will help other students with theirs when needed. As students learn more about the plants and reproduction, they will begin to use cuttings to clone the plants to auction off to teachers, building staff, and students.
