I have a class of first graders, ages five to seven. We love to smile, with gaping grins where baby teeth once were and where new teeth haven't quite come in. We are diverse ethnically, from every corner of the globe and we love to laugh in every language imaginable. We are diverse academically, from every end of the spectrum and we are excited to learn in real world ways, using our hands and fingers and our five senses. Many of my students are refugees from around the globe. An increasing number are from the local homeless shelters and have just moved into their first private apartment!
We love to learn: from hands on science and math manipulatives to books on every topic imaginable!
We are eager to learn! We like to touch, to feel, to get messy to learn from experience! We recognized the importance of technology but we love to make our learning come alive in the classroom!
My Project
Life cycles are an integral part of our core curriculum. We can use virtual reality to observe the processes that teach us the basics of life cycles. However, there is nothing that can compare with the here and now of hands on materials.
With hands on materials, life cycles come full cycle!
We can experience the care of poultry eggs, the agony of eggs that don't hatch as well as the joy of cheeping baby chicks! Tadpoles grow, ever so slowly, before our eyes! Seeds and fish nourish each other in a shared tank. And books sum it all up!
