My Students

We are a public choice school in Concord, CA. Parents and the community have committed to supporting their child's education by volunteering their time in and outside of the school and making education a priority. There is no question that our students are privileged to have such amazing support and perhaps one of the reasons we are one of the top 20% high performing public schools in California. However, we rely on time and energy, not money. Our wait lists are getting longer, and our school is becoming more and more wonderfully diverse which just widens the students' needs and abilities. Therefore, the need to look outside the box and find ways to meet the needs and abilities of our students is more important today than ever.

My Project

Teaching any kid to read and write is no easy task. Every year I try and find new and improved methods to teach phonics, decoding/blending and spelling. It has proven to be a difficult task. That is, until this year. While scrolling on social media, I kept coming across teachers raving about Secret Stories. So, I decided to look further and ordered just the flashcards to try it out. Almost instantly I saw my students soak up the stories, find them in their reading and try to apply them when they were decoding and writing. I knew I had found something that worked! But I also knew that I was doing the abbreviated version in class and that I needed to get the whole kit to thoroughly execute my teaching.

Secret Stories provides pictures and stories (logical, kid-friendly, explanations) to explain why letters make all of the crazy sounds that they do when they get together in words.

The Starter Kit provides large posters to display in the classroom, as well as access to songs, brainteasers, and the full-length Secret Stories to help support learning phonics. In addition to learning how to decode words and letter sounds, Secret Stories helps make students better writers and help guide them in becoming better spellers and more confident writers.
