Subscriptions for Self Paced Learning

Help me give my students access to digital subscriptions such as Nearpod, Padlet, and Gimkit to continue their journey in their self-paced and mastery-based learning.

My Students

I teach 100+ 7th Grade and 8th Grade students science at a rural Title I school in one of the poorest counties in upstate New York. Ninety percent of the student population in our school receives free or reduced-price lunch. My students are curious learners. They display a wide range of interests and are eager to make connections between what we learn in the classroom and what they see in the natural world.

COVID-19 has changed the face of education these last two school years, primarily in the need for equitable technology and innovative teaching.

My students clamored for autonomy and flexibility in their learning, and in response, I began to use the Modern Classrooms Project (MCP) model in our science classroom. The MCP is an instructional model that combines blended instruction, self-paced structures, and mastery-based learning. Our shift from traditional teaching and learning practices to MCP has drastically decreased student failures from 40% to 4% in the last year!

My Project

In order to continue our success with MCP in the “new normal” of hybrid and concurrent settings for the upcoming school year, we need your help in funding the digital subscriptions that we use every day with MCP. The free trials and subscriptions to the services we use during the pandemic have long since expired, even though teaching and learning in a pandemic still continue today.

Your gift of donation will help pay for the following subscriptions: Explain Everything EDU account; Nearpod Gold Teacher account; Padlet Pro account; and Gimkit Pro account.

The “Explain Everything” and “Nearpod” subscriptions are used for blended instruction and self-paced learning. I can create more personalized instructional videos with Explain Everything, which are then paired with interactive Nearpod activities such as 3D models and virtual reality field trips. These empower students to watch and complete lessons within units at their own pace in the classroom and at home. This also frees me to provide more timely remediation, enrichment, and more time to connect with students during the class time since I am not tied to the screen or the front of the room.

The “Padlet” and “Gimkit” subscriptions are used for daily social-emotional health checks, collaborative group activities, creation and publishing tools for student work, and interactive review with real-time adaptive assessment for mastery-based learning. The innovation of MCP in our science classroom is worth keeping. My students are in control of their learning, and they are loving it.
