Stunning Titles For Struggling Readers

Help me give my students books for struggling readers including popular young adult novels, graphic novels, and popular novels according to Goodreads.com as well as basic classroom supplies such as flip charts, a pencil sharpener, and markers.

My Students

My students are high achieving, creative, energetic, and have a strong sense of community. However, many of my students come into my classroom with a negative attitude toward reading and writing, and often resist the notion of reading for fun, and focus more so on grades and points rather than personal development and enrichment. My goal is to help students find joy in reading.

My students have diverse experiences, and complex lives much like the characters in contemporary young adult literature.

They also have diverse reading needs that must be met in order to participate in literary discourse. Each day I give students time to read books of their choice, but it is not enough to motivate them to read at home. Though some spend hours on end reading up to ten books per month and constantly strive to find more books to challenge and expand their literary repertoire, others have more challenges seeking out joy in literature, and I want to help them find the right books for them.

My Project

Let's face it: not every kid likes to read...yet. Certain teen demographics often get overlooked in developmentally appropriate books such as young adult genres, which leaves them left out of literary conversation or even worse - leaves them feeling as though they cannot identify themselves as a reader.

I've selected high-interest novels that are more likely to appeal to reluctant and struggling readers or students who often don't get to see themselves portrayed in young adult literature.

By giving to this project, you will give all of my students a chance. You are opening a door into accessible novels with relatable characters, beautiful artwork, and interesting story lines. I purposely do not require reading or lexile "levels" in my classroom choice reading units, because we must allow students to self-select titles that are right for them and allow them to be part of literary discourse despite how strong of a reader they are.

Literature does not have to be an elite club only open for those who have mastered reading strategies already. I believe that all students are entitled to enjoy a good book, and in order to allow them that freedom, they must have access to the best of the best titles in my classroom.

Additionally, students need access to a variety of supplies in order to make their thinking visible. I've also asked for basic materials so that I can assess student learning in a multitude of ways.
