Students With Special Needs Need Special Physical Supports

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have extra special needs. They may not walk, talk, hear or think as typical students do. My students can have difficulty stabilizing their hand(s) which leads to an inability to be independent using the iPad and/or eating.
All of our students use an iPad for educational purposes, most with physical support from the teacher or instructional assistant.
It is my hope that by having one hand stabilized, they will become more independent in this activity. In addition, hand stabilization may also help a student or two become more independent in feeding themselves.
We are asking for two Anchors so that students with too low or too high tone can receive support and develop strength in their hands and fingers. In particular, the Grab Bar can be used to stabilize both hands at once, and the Arm Anchor stabilizes the forearm, freeing up the dominant hand for activities.
My Project
The Grab Bar and Arm Anchor will make a difference in my students' learning as often times they may not have complete control over either the left or right hand, or sometimes both hands. As a result, they may lift both of their hands to try to activate the iPad, which leads to difficulties in using the iPad independently and participating in writing or art projects.
In addition, the Arm Anchor in particular, may help some students become independent in feeding themselves.
By having one hand stabilized, the dominant hand may be able to more accurately be independently lifted towards the mouth.
