Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title 1 low income public school in Los Angeles County. My first period class is my 7th Grade English Language Development class. When they come to class every morning, they bring inspiration, creativity, civility, and empathy with them. I encourage them to reach beyond expectations that society may set for them and to strive for the impossible. I taught most of these same students last very year, and they have become more enthusiastic and ambitious with their creativity and have tons of ideas for making the world a better place.
I know middle school students typically have trouble thinking beyond their own lives, however my students really want to make a difference in the world we live in.
This project will give them the opportunity to give back to nature, animals, and the world. It will also encourage them to use their English skills, which is what ELD is all about.
My 7th Grade ELD class would love to participate in this Literature Circle project that involves adopting endangered animal species. Students will read a novel, raise money, adopt an endangered animal, visit the Los Angeles Zoo, and write about their experience!
My Project
These books will encourage my students to be empathetic to humans and animals alike, while pushing them to become proficient in English. I strive to create a classroom where students can be themselves and explore what they are curious about, this project will allow me to continue pushing them on their educational journey. My students have great ideas that will help more than just themselves, but my classroom library isn't currently supporting that goal.
With these Literature Circle books, my students will be able to choose which endangered species they would like to help conserve.
These books will give my students the ability to choose the book or animal that interests them, giving them choice and voice.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in making a difference, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the world around them and beyond.
