In my art room, students were able to safely and efficiently cut cardboard materials, allowing us to complete larger collaborative sculpture projects that would have been difficult otherwise. Using the ChompSaw, my students created 55 dragon heads, which became the centerpiece of a Lunar New Year collaboration project. This tool expanded what students could physically build, improved their craftsmanship, and allowed them to work more independently with three-dimensional materials. As a result, my classroom has become a more active maker space where students are confident working with sculpture and large-scale cardboard construction.\r\n\r\nThe project also strengthened collaboration between grade levels and schools. I hosted 64 second graders from Smith Elementary School who partnered with my 7th and 8th grade students to help design and decorate the dragon heads. The middle school students acted as mentors, guiding the younger students through the creative process. This collaboration culminated in a walking field trip where my students performed a skit of The Tale of the Jade Emperor and the Great Race—a script written by one of my 8th grade students—for the entire Smith school community. The experience provided my students with authentic leadership, collaboration, and presentation opportunities while building excitement for the arts across both campuses.\r\n\r\nThe impact extended beyond my classroom to other schools as well. I visited Mitchell Elementary School during two lunch periods to help students decorate dragon heads so they could host their own parade celebration. Approximately 60 fifth graders had the opportunity to use the ChompSaw as part of this project, expanding access to hands-on creative tools beyond my own program. In my classroom, all 150 of my students now have regular access to the ChompSaw for cardboard sculpture projects. Currently, we are also using the tool to support nine students with autism, who are creating stand-up cardboard animals. The ability to cut and construct large pieces independently has increased engagement, confidence, and accessibility for these students, demonstrating how the ChompSaw supports both creative exploration and inclusive learning.","fullyFundedDate":1764716608682,"projectUrl":"project/cardboard-creations-building-big-ideas/9892684/","projectTitle":"Cardboard Creations: Building Big Ideas with the Chompshop STEM Bundle!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DAgostino","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1788421_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1477998665955","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jamsart"},{"teacherId":1788421,"projectId":7810272,"letterContent":"I personally want to take this opportunity to say thank you.\r\n\r\nThe presence of sketchbooks in the art room has had a profound impact. Thanks to the generous donors, our students now have their own sketchbooks, and we are incredibly grateful for the support. This contribution has truly made a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.\r\n\r\nThe sketchbooks have become a valuable tool for creativity and self-expression. We have utilized them to create a daily visual diary, capturing our thoughts and ideas through art. Additionally, the sketchbooks have allowed us to learn and explore various painting techniques, enhancing our artistic skills.\r\n\r\nBeyond the artistic aspect, the sketchbooks have provided a sense of solace and personal growth. They have become a source of comfort and reflection, allowing us to express ourselves freely. We are immensely thankful for your kindness and generosity, as it has enabled us to embark on this artistic journey and discover the power of self-expression through the sketchbooks.","fullyFundedDate":1696530435842,"projectUrl":"project/creative-escape/7810272/","projectTitle":"Creative Escape","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DAgostino","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1788421_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1477998665955","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jamsart"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27414","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":704,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":83,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":77.1,"schoolId":27414,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jane Addams Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jane Addams Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/lawndale-elementary-school-district/jane-addams-middle-school/27414"}
