I teach in a school district that is largely made up of transient minority families who struggle with life on a day to day basis and often depend on their children to help support the family. Many of our high school students work after school and only see the value of their jobs now without seeing the value of having a good eduction that will help them with their lives in the future. I teach Desktop Publishing as a Running Start Course that can help these kids get their hands around a career and receive college credit from a local Community College. For many of my students, this is like a dream come true since they would be the first in their family to be able to say they have taken a college course.

Students in Desktop Publishing are taught how to present themselves and interact with clients as they would in the real world. These high school students are given an opportunity to learn how to create a publication beginning with design conception all the way to production and distribution. Since our district is struggling financially like many others in the country right now, our funding has been slashed and we have been told that we cannot allow our students to print anything. That simply means that they cannot see what their finished products looks like. Without funding for basic supplies such as paper and toner for the copier in my classroom, my students now ask why they have to the work if they cannot even see what they have done. Having a final copy of a project that they can hold and show off is so important for their already fragile self-worth.

This is one project that stretches beyond my high school classroom and touches several others in the elementary schools nearby. These elementary students will someday come to our high school and this is one way to bridge the gap and show them the value of higher education. Not only will my students get the added benefit of seeing the reaction of the younger student who will be receiving a professional looking finished copy of their own creation, but they will be able to connect with the fourth and fifth graders and show them that high school is something to look forward to and has value for their future as well.

Because our district is largely lower income, high-risk inner-city kids of diverse cultures we teachers often struggle with getting the kids to buy into why education is so important. We fight to get them into the school and we often fight against their perceptions that they "will never use" what they learn in high school. We need to find a way to show them that what they learn in school is important and can help improve the outlook for their future and show that what they do has value. With your financial assistance, we can give them a project that they can control from start to finish that will show them that what they learn has value--they have value. Without your help, I would not be able to provide my class with the tools they would need to accomplish this one project this year. Thank you in advance for whatever you can do to help my kids.
