My Project

Independent reading programs that encourage self-selected titles give rise to kids who not only read but also who want to read. Frequent reading creates proficient readers who thrive personally and academically. The 130 students studying Spanish at my middle school are asked to independently read self-selected Spanish language books every day.

Studies show that students read self-selected books from cover to cover 91% of the time (Studebaker, 1977).

Our students know what they want to read, they just need our school library to acquire them! Because these books will be part of the school library, the books will be available to all students in the school for years to come. Also, our district, of 20,000 students, utilizes Inter-Library Loans; these books could be used in the future by students throughout the district. Because these two series are so popular, countless students may select and read these books.

It’s especially important for children to read as much as possible because the effects of reading are cumulative. Research shows that regular reading: improves brain connectivity; increases vocabulary and comprehension; empowers one to empathize with others; aids in sleep readiness; reduces stress; lowers blood pressure and heart rate; fights depression symptoms; prevents age-related cognitive decline; and contributes to a longer life.
