Students Need Help Passing High Stakes Test

My students need 6 calculators in order to assist them in passing their High Stakes Test at the end of the year.

My Students

"If we teach today like we taught yesterday, we are robbing our students of tomorrow," said popular education reformer John Dewey. Without the necessary technology, my students are in danger of having their high school careers ended in ninth grade due to recent reforms in High Stakes testing.

The students in my school are hungry for a future with all the opportunities available to students in high income areas.

However, my students are forced to overcome barriers that students in higher income areas do not encounter. Due to a series of laws recently passed throughout Arkansas, all ninth grade students are required to pass the Algebra 1 End of Course test in order to receive credit for the course. Essentially, a student could earn an "A" in Algebra, but have their credit withheld until they passed this test. This test is extremely rigorous, especially considering the prerequisite gaps that exist in many of my students math knowledge. Because of recent budget cutbacks and the ensuing faculty rearrangements, my class no longer has the technology necessary to adequately prepare my students for their End of Course exam. In order to fully prepare my students for this exam, it is essential that they have the technology they are expected to use during the test.

My Project

With these calculators, my students will learn to utilize this technology in order to be prepared for their End of Course Exam. In class last year, we used calculators each day, and this was one of the key factors that lead to my students doubling the proficiency rate from the previous year on the End of Course exam. Using these calculators, students will be taught to interpret linear and quadratic graphs, solve quadratic formulas, add and subtract matrices, and several other skills that will be tested on the End of Course exam. With the skills these calculators will give my students, they will be prepared to pass this exam, which will set them up for success in high school, college, and their future career. Problems from this test are also very similar to problems students will see on the ACT and SAT. This is the first major test my students will take in high school, and if we set them up to succeed on this exam, they will be on the right path to succeed throughout high school and college.

The dropout rate in my high school last year was 50%.

There is an extremely high correlation between those who dropout and those who fail the End of Course test. Because of the work my students and I did last year, we were able to double the proficiency rate on the End of Course exam. However, without this technology, it will be difficult to achieve similar results on this year's exam this. Please help my students pass this exam so their high school careers will not be ended in ninth grade.
