Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classroom, it is common to see fireworks exploding while hearing, "SSSuper!" Students' faces smile as they congratulate each other on their accomplishments, whether big or small. They enjoy giving each other praises with added hand gestures for sharing ideas and encouraging others.
My students are caring and smart.
Most students are new to the United States as many move from Mexico. Our school has the largest population of English as a Second Language students in our county. They try hard to succeed, but require a lot of extra services to excel in reading and language development. At our school, most students receive additional services by additional small-group intervention teachers ranging from 1 to 4 times daily!
I was hired much later in the year (March) due to a military move. But in the short time with them, I have seen them grow leaps and bounds after given consistent instruction. They possess a strong desire to learn which makes my job that much more enjoyable.
My Project
With a chart easel and chart stand I can have a proper place to lead whole group instruction. I teach using chart paper to create drawings and teach new concepts. With an easel, students can easily add to the charts themselves. Also with an easel, everyone can actually see as I am writing, rather than me writing with my back turned toward them while trying to use the board as a hard surface. The charts serve a a place to come back to when students are working on their own. Additionally, with a chart stand, students can walk to the chart stand to reference what they have learned previously to effectively complete their assignments.
Having a teaching easel will allow students to be part of more efficient lessons.
We meet on the carpet as a class to learn new concepts several times a day. The easel would be a place for students to focus on during these lessons. Their materials (such as books and math blocks) would be easily accessible as they are housed in the easel to help students develop connections to the new concepts. Also, as students understand concepts, they would have a place to lead lessons themselves!
