Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inspired and creative individuals who are not afraid of hard work and are very involved in our diverse and vibrant community. My students face many challenges in their daily lives due to different and often extreme circumstances that can affect how they learn, and many of them do not have the same opportunities that most children do to experience the arts and independent expression in school.
For my students, art is a very helpful tool to build confidence, and increase communication and empathy.
It also gives them an outlet to express their opinions and ideas, and tell their personal stories to each other and their community.
Art is something that excites my students, and their enthusiasm is very inspiring! They are improving as artists every day and their willingness to challenge themselves as creators helps me to do the same as a teacher. We create works of art that uplift others and share them with our school and greater community. We support causes, and participate in exhibitions throughout our city. My students are hard working and caring kids who deserve to have real opportunities to experience enriching educational projects.
My Project
This year my students will be focusing on the importance of identity and representation in the visual arts. We will be exploring the ways that art can represent people and culture, and even lift up marginalized individuals by representing them in powerful ways. We will focus on creating more inclusive art that all people can feel drawn to and represented by, rather than a small margin of people who often look the same and do not represent our school or surrounding community. We will also be cleaning and restoring an area of school that could use some loving care.
My students don't always get a chance to see themselves reflected in the art and visual images they see every day; this will give my students a chance to feel important and represented powerfully in our school environment.
I hope to also create an exhibition of these sculptures to share with other young people who may feel left out of arts and pop culture imagery.
