What do you want to be when you grow up? If you could live anywhere where would it be? Who is your hero? If you could be teacher for the day ... This is just an example of a daily journal prompt for students to really begin to use their imagination and be able to tell their stories through writing.
I am a first year teacher and am anxiously looking forward to meeting my students here in just a few short weeks.
We are school going through what we call a big transition. The State of Ohio calls it a "turn around school." Which basically means that the school lies in academic emergency and scored in the lowest 20% of the state when it comes to overall academics. Therefore, the state has been called in and their has been an 80% staff change throughout the building in order to implement this new turn around model this upcoming school year. With that being said the students in my class come from a very diverse, inner city background each with challenges of their own outside of the classroom. While we will be working on overcoming obstacles at school these students struggle with the daily obstacles of a difficult home life. Ensuring that students know that school is a safe, fun place to learn will be our number one obstacle from the very beginning.
I am requesting a donation for daily writing journals. As crucial as reading is writing goes hand in hand with reading and is a way for students to express themselves. Each student will have their own journal and will use it daily in the classroom. Students will be given journal prompts, will be asked to respond to something their reading, or use a spelling word in their writing just as a few examples. This is a time for students to be able to express themselves creatively and communicate with me. Students will also have time to write about a topic of their choice. Their is also an area for students to draw a picture that goes along with their writing this allows for students to be able to not only express themselves with their writing but artistically as well!
Students have so much they want to say, what better way to be able to do so by allowing them to have their own personal story journal.
A place where they can take time out of their daily routine and really just be able to express themselves through writing.
