I am a first year teacher and am anxiously looking forward to meeting my students here in just a few short weeks. We are school going through what we call a big transition. The State of Ohio calls it a "turn around school." Which basically means that the school lies in academic emergency and scored in the lowest 20% of the state when it comes to overall academics. Therefore, the state has been called in and their has been an 80% staff change throughout the building in order to implement this new turn around model this upcoming school year. With that being said the students in my class come from a very diverse, inner city background each with challenges of their own outside of the classroom. While we will be working on overcoming obstacles at school these students struggle with the daily obstacles of a difficult home life. Ensuring that students know that school is a safe, fun place to learn will be our number one obstacle from the very beginning.
