Many times when students might be worked up and crying they will utilize this space to work through those emotions and regulate. Your kindness allows me to supply snacks to about 15-20 students a day (these are my regulars), it may be more. They are appreciative of having this extra snack available to supplement their breakfast or lunch and/or to tie them over until they get home. Thank you!\r\n\r\nAs always my students are excited when I receive packages because they never know what is in them, but they know something good is going to be revealed. Once the snacks were revealed, the knocking at my door began. Me: \"Where are you supposed to be?\" Them: \"The bathroom, but I came to check on you, Mr. Garr.\" Me: \"Okay, you've checked, your 3 minutes are up, please go back to class.\" Them: \"Um, Mr. Garr, can I get a snack?\" Me laughing: \"See you're just using me for my snacks, but I love you anyway!\" We laugh together as they reach in and get their snacks, then they hug me and leave until the next time! This is what the impact looks like, not only do they trust me to supply a physical need (snack), but also an emotional need (love, acceptance).\r\n\r\n\"Healthy Snacking\" is showing my students that there are other alternatives to the traditional snacks they eat, i.e. Takis, which are just as flavorful and filling. Sharing a snack with my students is a great way to bond, build and maintain relationships, plus show caring because now I'm on their level as a person, who enjoys a snack here and there. Teaching my students to ask, using their manners is another goal that will have great impact in other areas of their lives, i.e. social settings. \r\n\r\nMy last thought and the greatest impact: I had 2 female students who helped me clean up after our December Student of the Month assembly. I brought them upstairs after their hard work, and gave them a bag and set out some of the snacks for them to choose from. They were so excited and one of the students told me the other day when we were passing in the hall, \"Mr. Garr, those snacks you gave us the other day were delicious!\" WOW, just a few chosen items made a great difference in her life that day!!! I had him reach in and take out the soaps for himself. They surprise me with their ability to advocate for what they need, even basic items for personal hygiene. This past week, I have had over 15 students come into my office and see the baggies filled with different hygiene items and ask if they can get one. Of course I say, \"Yes!\" Having these items available for my students is awesome, and I am so grateful that my students can ask for and receive what they need, which in turn gives them the control over fulfilling a need instead of the adults forcing them to accept something and maybe triggering a negative feeling and response.\r\n\r\nMy next steps, thanks to the wonderful DonorChoose partners, is to continue to provide the baggies filled with the personal care items as well as support the nurse in her well-being program for our students. We recently received a new washer and dryer, so another next step is to be able to provide a safe space with laundry products so that when students have accidents, they can be able to wash their clothes, especially those whose parents are unable to get to the school with clean clothes, and again proactively help cut down on bullying.\r\n\r\nI can go on and on about how appreciative I am of our DonorChoose partners, and their generosity in helping me to help my students feel safe and well cared for daily. If I forget to refill the boxes, the students will let me know with facial expressions when I tell them I was working and forgot. It is funny to see their disbelief that I was working, even when I am sitting there working, but they leave and check back later to see if I was able to refill the boxes. It makes their day and helps grow our relationships.\r\n\r\nI remember the one student who was spending his recess with me because he helps with the kindergarten lunch, when he first saw me open one of the boxes to reward him with a treat, his eyes got big, he put his hand up to his chest as if he was having a heart attack, the classic surprised reaction, and it made me smile then and now as I type these words. They will be able to help fill the cabinet once I finish putting it together. The biggest lesson our students have learned during this process with the delays is patience.
