I shared 'The Comic Book Story of Basketball: A Fast-Break History of Hoops' with one of my players and you could see the excitement in his eyes as he flipped through the pages and was able to identify various players. He struggles somewhat with reading so this for me was huge as he read out various names and some of the information.\r\n\r\nI'm a reader so when students want to read, but struggle, I allow them to choose a book and then read with them. I encourage them every time they succeed in successfully completing a paragraph or sentence. Not many of them have someone at home reading with them and encouraging them when they do well, so it is very important for me to verbally encourage them when we read together, as well as use the books from this project to help them choose reading materials that they are interested in. \r\n\r\nA few students, who are working on 'Thank You' notes were excited to pick their own book. They stood there searching through the books until they found the one that suited them. I left them to begin reading, and one of the female students said to me, \"Mr. Garr, I'm already on page 10.\" This is an example of reading when the book is fun and interesting, you start reading and can't wait to finish. Our future goal for this project is to build a special interest library and start a small book club with some of our older students. I want them to not only enjoy reading but to be able to share it with others in a small group setting, which we don't do much of any more in schools. I am so excited for the DonorsChoose community to receive the 'Thank You' notes from my students and also to know that I'm so very grateful for all of your support with this awesome project! As I unpacked the boxes and students were going by, they would run into my office to see what was new. Before I could even get the boxes unpacked really well, I heard, \"I have 34 compliment tickets, I can buy that and that!\"; \"Hey Mr. Garr, can I get something for free!\"; \"Is that slime, does it glow in the dark?\", and many more comments that brought a smile to my face because of their excitement!\r\n\r\nThe growth in many of our students behaviorally has been tremendous and this project is a way to continue to reward and encourage them to continue to practice the social emotional skills that we are teaching them, as well as setting personal goals that they can achieve, not because I ask them to but because it makes them feel good internally and then shows externally. I have a student who comes to me for Check-In/Check-Out, a PBIS Tier 2 intervention and he earns points that turn into rewards. He is supposed to check-in in the morning then return in the afternoon, right before dismissal, to share his success for the day; but he is so excited now that he stops in at least 2 additional times and says, \"Mr. Garr, guess what?; I have 12 points already\" or \"Mr. Garr, I almost have 36 points, can I spend time with you?\" He is growing and I'm excited to reward him with the various items that were donated by your generosity.\r\n\r\nWe celebrate our students who don't have a referral for the whole month, and they are given a certificate with our Monthly Character Trait on it as well as a piece of candy, so the Jolly Ranchers came right on time for the January & February celebrations! Thank you so very much!\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue to teach our students the necessary SEL lessons and skills that will enable them to move even higher in being able to self-regulate, make better choices that will enable them to be \"Caught Being Good\" and then earn that reward, they desire! Sometimes they over dramatize things, which tickles me and endears them to me. I was able to show them and they were excited especially with the Unicorn Galaxy Slime and Squishy Squeeze balls! All our students love the playfulness of slime from Pre-K to 6th grade, the ability to touch, stretch and manipulate the slime helps them to focus their minds and relax, which is what this project is all about - teaching our children how to be in charge of their own self-regulation.\r\n\r\nMastering self-regulation takes time and repeated practice of the skill over and over. With this project we have the opportunity and now, a variety of resources to help our students do just this, from crayons where they can create artwork to slime and squishy toys that they can manipulate the items when they're sad or happy or angry or just as a way to get used to self-regulating.\r\n\r\nI had a little Pre-K student choose 2 slimes, as she said, \"I'm getting one for my brother...\", and the Instructional Assistant laughed and replied, \"that's what I figured.\" This light moment is a reflection of most of our students, always thinking ahead or of someone else; and the staff who works with our students, continues to encourage them. I am so thankful to each of you our dear Donors for your continued support of my/our students and their emotional, academic and mental well-being. Many times when students might be worked up and crying they will utilize this space to work through those emotions and regulate. Your kindness allows me to supply snacks to about 15-20 students a day (these are my regulars), it may be more. They are appreciative of having this extra snack available to supplement their breakfast or lunch and/or to tie them over until they get home. Thank you!\r\n\r\nAs always my students are excited when I receive packages because they never know what is in them, but they know something good is going to be revealed. Once the snacks were revealed, the knocking at my door began. Me: \"Where are you supposed to be?\" Them: \"The bathroom, but I came to check on you, Mr. Garr.\" Me: \"Okay, you've checked, your 3 minutes are up, please go back to class.\" Them: \"Um, Mr. Garr, can I get a snack?\" Me laughing: \"See you're just using me for my snacks, but I love you anyway!\" We laugh together as they reach in and get their snacks, then they hug me and leave until the next time! This is what the impact looks like, not only do they trust me to supply a physical need (snack), but also an emotional need (love, acceptance).\r\n\r\n\"Healthy Snacking\" is showing my students that there are other alternatives to the traditional snacks they eat, i.e. Takis, which are just as flavorful and filling. Sharing a snack with my students is a great way to bond, build and maintain relationships, plus show caring because now I'm on their level as a person, who enjoys a snack here and there. Teaching my students to ask, using their manners is another goal that will have great impact in other areas of their lives, i.e. social settings. \r\n\r\nMy last thought and the greatest impact: I had 2 female students who helped me clean up after our December Student of the Month assembly. I brought them upstairs after their hard work, and gave them a bag and set out some of the snacks for them to choose from. They were so excited and one of the students told me the other day when we were passing in the hall, \"Mr. Garr, those snacks you gave us the other day were delicious!\" WOW, just a few chosen items made a great difference in her life that day!!!
