My Students

I teach 110 9th grade students in an underperforming district in Connecticut. 100% of my students qualify for free lunch. Many of them have had brushes with the law, despite being willing learners once they set foot in the hallways of the high school.

Inside our classroom this year, we are learning about the injustice in America's judicial system and how it effects their lives and the lives of their families each day.

My students are especially interested in reading, when they are reading a text that they can see their own life reflected through.

My Project

I am asking for the anchor text, Monster by Walter Dean Myers to use as an essential reading and discussion piece in my classroom this year and for classes to come. We will use the text to evaluate major themes such as societal and social injustices, their causes and conditions, as well as what their role is in it.

The book delves into the same issues that the students in my class are dealing with on a regular basis.

The main character is relatable in his actions and his relationship to them.

By reading books where their experiences are represented, they will begin to put the pieces together between their actions and the consequences whether just or unjust.
