I am asking for the anchor text, Monster by Walter Dean Myers to use as an essential reading and discussion piece in my classroom this year and for classes to come. We will use the text to evaluate major themes such as societal and social injustices, their causes and conditions, as well as what their role is in it. The book delves into the same issues that the students in my class are dealing with on a regular basis. The main character is relatable in his actions and his relationship to them. By reading books where their experiences are represented, they will begin to put the pieces together between their actions and the consequences whether just or unjust.
