This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have had the opportunity to work with 60 amazing high school juniors (who will soon be SENIORS!) for the entire extent of their high school experience through the AVID program. AVID is a program that is meant to lessen the gap in achievement among students of different ethnicities and social class while preparing them for success when they enter college.

These students have quickly become my "children" and we share a unique passion for learning and treading a goal-oriented path.

They are passionate about creating a difference in their community and I know that they will do so through furthering their education. Many of them aspire to be doctors, nurses, lawyers, educators, and business owners; there is no doubt in my mind that our future will be in good hands as long as these students are involved.

All of these students are on track to attend a four-year university, with many of them already working to obtain licenses in the medical field, and dual enrollment courses. All 53 students will be first-generation college goers, and are currently enrolled in the AVID elective to help prepare them for college success and career readiness.

My Project

My AVID students work together in a collaborative manner to solve for points of confusion (an aspect of their learning in any subject area in which they struggle, or have difficulty understanding). These students work in groups of about seven to help one another solve problems through discussion, inquiry, and the use of their notes.

These AVID students work together to ensure that everyone finds academic success and having the double-sided rolling whiteboard makes this process doable.

The double-sided rolling whiteboard helps separate the different student groups and creates an opportunity for multiple groups to take place at the same time. The whiteboards function as a brain-map, and as notes. All students are able to engage and give full participation when they are able to see the original question, the pre-work, and the point-of-confusion. Together they find success in their academics as they prepare to venture off into college settings.
