We are using the novel to study how authors develop a larger story through multiple perspectives. Students are learning to evaluate a narrator's reliability, compare conflicting accounts, trace themes across separate interviews, and support their interpretations with specific textual evidence. The book also allows us to discuss how fictional crises reflect real historical events, government responses, public fear, misinformation, and human behavior.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students read and annotate independently, pause for short written reflections, and then discuss what each new account adds to their understanding of the disaster. Because every student has a book, they can follow along, return to important passages, and participate without waiting to share a copy. The interview-style structure has also made the novel more approachable for students who find traditional, chapter-based novels overwhelming.\r\n\r\nSome of my most reluctant readers have been especially interested in the combination of horror, survival, history, and social commentary. Students who do not usually volunteer during literary discussions are asking questions, comparing characters' choices, and debating what they would do in similar situations.
