This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What is more special than a group of students who wants to push themselves to be their best every single day? I have the joy of working with a group of students who will be taking a brand new 8th grade algebra class at our school. Research shows that students who are able to take algebra in middle school (and calculus in high school) have many more paths open up as they advance into high school and onto college. Growing up in South Los Angeles, these talented students seldom have the opportunity to push themselves because the course offerings at many local high schools are fixed. With this new course, we aim to give our students flexibility when they are looking at high school options and to continue to encourage them to think critically and act consciously.

These students love math, and they are some of the hardest working people that I have ever met.

My Project

These students are ready to excel and will take full advantage of this opportunity to enter high school confident and excited to pursue further education in math. These calculators are a step on that journey, and will help familiarize themselves with more advanced mathematical concepts. They will use the calculators in groups, building a strong team identity and helping each other maximize their learning. These students will be the ones changing our world for the better, leading us to a brighter future.

Too many students lack access to the technology necessary to be successful in advanced math courses.

This project will put valuable materials into the hands of students who need it most.
