My Students

We are a diverse (Title I) school with 60% of students bused in from neighborhoods disproportionately affected by poverty. While this can be a disadvantage to academic success, the families are often very supportive and encouraging.

My appreciation grows every day they overcome language or economic barriers to attend and excel in class.

The differences are less important than the commonalities. All are proud participants in the broader school culture.

This is an amazing opportunity to modify my classroom to better meet student needs.

My Project

My classroom is going paperless and the need for traditional desk arrangements is waning. Observing non-traditional layouts in secondary settings has taught me even older students benefit from seating choice and increased physical comfort. A battery of comfort chairs will join donated furniture to achieve my goals.

Innovative classroom layout and seating will facilitate collaborative learning centers and promote greater student engagement.

This classroom arrangement will help align a curriculum built around choice to the "centers" you might find in elementary education. Research suggests greater student engagement and learning will result. Technology-based instruction is enhanced by greater student comfort and choice.
