Our grow tower, which has been a drying rack for the winter, is being prepped and cleaned out. These seeds will soon be slotted into their spaces and the water flow and grow lights turned in.\r\n\r\nWe will then compare our growth in a grow tower to the hydroponic tanks to our outdoor garden boxes as we work on solutions to to producing food in urban areas, as we have learned that 70% of the world's population is migrating towards urban centers. Students have practiced recording the names of plants and animals we have seen, as well as weather conditions. We have learned about the seven elements of art and how we can experiment with the paints and watercolor pencils in our kits. This has been an exciting blend of science and art done in nature.\r\n\r\nAll of the students were so excited to be the first (and only) people to use these materials, so immediately the whole project felt very special. Students started their nature journals by making something that represents them, so each has taken ownership of the additional work they have done inside their notebooks. \r\n\r\nBeing able to do science in this way has made them ask great questions about the birds and plants that we have seen - are they related to each other? Are there the same birds in our creek that are in the nearby salt marsh our creek feeds into? Why are the non-native plants here, and would it be better to take them out? Students have asked to go back to the creek day after day to add to their observations, to perfect the color of a flower drawing, or to see what new organisms there are. \r\n\r\nThis has been a really awe inspiring opprutnity for both my students and myself. Because of your generosity, my students were able to use real scientific tools, including Secchi discs and turbidity tubes, to investigate water quality firsthand.\r\n\r\nYesterday, students visited Rose Creek to conduct field testing and lay transect lines to study the ecosystem. They collected authentic data, analyzed environmental conditions, and experienced what marine scientists actually do in the field. This hands-on work directly supported our IB Marine Science unit on intertidal habitats and helped bring our classroom learning to life.\r\n\r\nMany students expressed how exciting it was to use professional equipment and conduct real research. Students have chosen their plots and making decisions about the type of soil that they want to use and what to plant in their area to work with the season and the climate in our area. \r\n\r\nWhen asked if they wanted an indoor or an outdoor growing place not one single team chose indoor. This lets you know just how excited they are to be able to use an outdoor space for learning. And then they are delighted with the idea that they can harvest what they produce too. We are going beyond what their intended us was to create all sorts of different learning experiences. For example: we observed the living environment and impact of feeding on water quality with crawfish, grew different types of aquatic producers, measured the impact of temperature change on respiration rates of goldfish and built mesocosms. So much that can be done with have good equipment. What it did limit though was our abilities to do quick calculations, especially with data that we connected. For every student in the room to have access to a calculator is great. We aren't trying to do data analysis that requires tons of steps with it - we have computers for that. But so often we are working with a quick percent change, or percent of something, and having that math be fast for us is vital. We very much appreciate have regular calculators in class, so thanks. They actively put the testing kits to use, determining the amount of different types of nutrients found in the soils from different areas around where we live. \r\n\r\nThe students then used what they learned to talk about soil types and nutrients with elementary school students, where we learned that the soils at the local marsh are more fertile than many that they brought in, unless they had brought from their gardens. \r\n\r\nNext students will use these test kits to monitor how soil qualities change over the course of ecosystem cycling as they build ecocolumns. Students used them the first time to check the water quality of the aquariums that had crayfish living in them to ensure that the water was suitable for their critters. They then started using them to monitor the water quality in our local ecosystems; the creek and marsh beside our school. Finally we are currently in the middle of meeting up with elementary students to teach them how to monitor the marsh ecosystem. \r\n\r\nWe will continue to use these kits throughout the year, as well build ecocolumns and need to maintain a healthy habitat for the aquatic organisms in it. We appreciate having the testing kits available to us to do all of these different projects and rely on them week after week for the whole year.
