Students in my classroom are preparing for the rigor they will face when they take IB English. This course will require them to read texts from around the world. As a way for them to dip their toes into the rigor they will face in their junior and senior year, I want them to read the following texts: 1. Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - Colombian author, text translated from Spanish. 2. The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris - New Zealand native and current resident of Australia. 3. The Color Purple by Alice Walker - African American author 4. Oedipus the King by Sophocles - Ancient Greek playwright 5. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse - German author, text translated from German 6. Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare - UK, Renaissance. For this campaign I am trying to gain 4 class sets of Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor. Obtaining these will expose students to a well-known Latin author. Students will be able to read the author's account of an event he experienced. During reading, students will analyze techniques that the author uses in order to achieve a particular effect and why they are important. For example, what literary devices were used in the text? How did the use of those literary devices convey the various emotions present in the novel? After reading, students will write a short story that depicts an event in their past. They will need to use specific literary devices (like the ones Garcia Marques utilized) in order to convey the various emotions felt during their experience. In this way they are practicing what they have learned during the reading process.
