How can I teach my kids to fall in love with reading when they cannot find a good book?
My Kindergarten and First Grade students are beginning readers.
Over half of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Despite coming from poverty, many of my students are rising up to my expectations and beyond. My kids love to be silly and have fun. They are also extremely caring - they help one another and love to share. They really are an awesome group! :)
My Project
Every two weeks I go to to library and fill my bag full of library books to share with the students. I've noticed that when I put new books out the news spreads like wildfire, "There are new books!!! Look!! Ms. A got new books!" Eventually I would like to have more books of my own that I can put out every few weeks to share with the students. The students have plenty of opportunities during the day to choose books off a shelf to read, like during our literacy centers or right after snack before we get ready for recess. These new books will help students continue to eagerness to read.
By helping fill our bookshelves you will help reduce my visits to the local library (although I love going to the library it can oftentimes be very time consuming).
You will also be providing my students with new books, which means new experiences for learning and new conversations. Plus, you just might introduce a student to her/his new favorite book!
