My students at Carver are generally an energetic and lively bunch! When I come to school in the mornings I am always welcomed with smiling faces stories, updating me since the last time I saw them. Many of my students love to dance and have a lot of fun in my class when they are able to apply themselves. My Wildcat Dancers range in age from 10-13 years old and most come from low-income households. My students are focused on social connection and forming their social identities (as are most middle schoolers), managing their emotions and discovering how to self-soothe, and learning what distinguishes themselves from the crowd. All of my students are provided with a space to dance and explore their bodies in a safe and secure environment. In my classroom, there is an emphasis on emotional intelligence and its application to the collaborative nature in our dance environment. Community and respect characterize the classroom with mutual support from all. This foundation of respect allows my students to develop and refine their creative voice and free expression. We celebrate each others successes and if we fall, we make it part of the dance.
The materials I've chosen will allow my students to train and challenge themselves to increase their range of flexibility, gain strength in major and minor muscle groups, and feed into their technical prowess while in my class. Strong and flexible dancers are the better dancers and I want to give my students the best shot they can get! Many of the items will be used for fine tuning balance from beginner to advanced levels, as balance is an essential element of technique in dance. The resistance bands are multi-use, but would help my students increase their flexibility by assisting their stretches. I would also have my students use the resistance bands for some strengthening activities.
