Story of America Quilts: Arts Integration Engaging Kids

My students need supplies to create their own paper quilts as we integrate art into our study of American History by included the folk craft of quilting.

My Students

Art does not belong on the sidelines! The power of art to engage students is limited only by children's access to quality art materials. As my students study American History, the more they can do hands-on projects, the more meaningful, motivating, and memorable their learning will be.

My fifth graders are creative and engaged learners who are enjoying a project-based education at our environmental charter school.

They enjoy exploring nature, creating art, and making connections between their learning and their lives through the use of art materials not only in the art classroom, but also in our regular classroom.

My Project

These resources will enable my students to make personal paper quilts representing what they learn as they explore the traditions of quilting in the Native American, African, Pioneer, and Amish cultures. As we travel through American History my students will do more than just read and memorize names, dates, and places. Our goal is to LIVE history! We'll travel around our town to explore historic locations, read fiction and non-fiction texts about each time period, create journals as though we really lived in each time period, and explore folk art and craft of the people from different cultures and American experiences. Integrating the arts into our study of history will enable my students to make personal connections with each time period and culture.

Creating, designing, and constructing their own representative paper quilts will help my students connect their learning with a meaningful art experience.

It will give children with different learning abilities the opportunity to shine creatively. By supporting our project you are voting "YES" to including art in all areas of our school's curriculum!
