I tell my students quite often as I enjoy who they are:
"If I had 25 beds (and an extra bathroom), I'd take you all home".
Okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but wanting to provide the best for my students is very near to my heart.
What I love most about my students is the way they make me feel. Let me give you an example. We start every day with affirmations. Students with stuffed whales pick another peer to affirm for a job "whale" done. They say "thank you for...", "I like how...", or "I like when...". One student picked me and said, "I like how you try your best even when you don't know what you're doing." I know that sounds awful, but the intentions were spot on! For the past two years I have looped from first to second grade with my class. We have implemented two new programs and the kids are so patient and understanding as we all learn it together!
I want to be able to make them feel just as special by providing them with resources and materials to support their learning.
Teaching in a highly transient district means the class that starts the school year with me will not be the class that ends the school year with me. One thing I want to be consistent is classroom routines and procedures. When students know what to expect it cuts down on explanations and allows for more instructional time.
Having durable storage with clear bins allows students to access the best manipulatives they need for math, use the manipulatives as needed, and return them to the correct location.
Students can chose from base ten blocks, unifix cubes, 120 charts, counters, etc.
Having materials within their reach gives them more control of their learning. When you help me store, you help them soar.
