Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve a diverse population of students in the central valley of California who are just beginning their high school careers. Many of these students come from a small farm community where hard work and family values make up the foundation for how children learn, grow, and become productive citizens. Most of these students are from families that, at times, must do their best to make ends meet as the population of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch rates is above 80%. Several students are also English Language Learners, which creates a greater demand for classroom activities that support language acquisition while at the same time trying to master grade-level content standards. Some of these children have faced challenges that much of the adult population will not face in their lifetimes. Such challenges can lead to lead to a lack of self-confidence, motivation, and belief that they can climb out of these challenging situations.
My Project
My swim team is in desperate need of some stopwatches to help improve the quality of practices. With more stopwatches available to us, we will be able to make practices more like a meet and conduct time trials so that our athletes will know exactly where they stand with their current performances.
Having the ability to give my athletes immediate feedback on their current level of performance is a luxury I have never been able to offer them on a consistent basis - these stopwatches will afford me that opportunity.
These stopwatches will also give us the ability to have a backup time in every lane when we host meets. Backup times are crucial in the event that our electronic timing system fails for any reason - the stopwatch times can still allow the meet to continue without any delays to the athletes or spectators watching the meet!
