My classes are culturally diverse based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, religion, and geographical area. Our physical education classes are focused on recognizing and appreciating cultural diversity which prepares each of them to be active citizens in the “real world”. Therefore, my teaching must be presented diversely so all students have equal opportunities to learn. The program I am building allows my students to learn by engaging in real-world games, activities, sports, and projects.
My goal is to encourage my students to take advantage of every opportunity afforded to them.
The first day of class I made this statement, “ This class is a journey that involves risks. Are you ready?” and they have stepped up to the challenge. My students are unique, fun, energetic, competitive risk takers striving to be successful in all aspects of the class. Physical education teaches the necessary knowledge and skills for working with and relating to others, and provides the learning opportunities to develop these skills. Years from now, I want each student to remember this class was where they learned team building skills, critical and creative thinking, and respect for self and others.
My Project
The primary function of a Physical Education program is to provide opportunities for physical activity. It is important to identify resources that increase both PE opportunities and levels of student activity. Exposure to an adequate amount of PE class time during which physical activity is maximized increases students’ energy expenditure, which is a key contributor to the maintenance of healthy weight and fitness. As students spend more of their free time playing video games and surfing the Internet, physical education classes in schools have become increasingly important for the health and well-being of children.
Our physical education program has faced numerous challenges including inactivity among children and families, competing academic priorities, and budget cuts; however, we are focused on providing PE to all students.
The middle school years provide a platform for students to focus on their physical activity. Pedometers offer a concrete and comprehensible measure of physical activity. The pedometer would allow me to evaluate students by providing the physical evidence that the student is moving and making an effort to be involved. Motivation is a great incentive, and I believe students tend to be more motivated when they have something to work towards. Unfortunately, the money to purchase pedometers is not available; however, with your help we will continue to build a quality physical education program. These pedometers will allow me to not only evaluate our students but to participate in step challenges throughout the semester, and provide our students with the best PE experience possible. I believe my students deserve the best and I want to give them the same types of positive experiences that I had and this equipment will go a long way in allowing me to do so.
