The primary function of a Physical Education program is to provide opportunities for physical activity. It is important to identify resources that increase both PE opportunities and levels of student activity. Exposure to an adequate amount of PE class time during which physical activity is maximized increases students’ energy expenditure, which is a key contributor to the maintenance of healthy weight and fitness. As students spend more of their free time playing video games and surfing the Internet, physical education classes in schools have become increasingly important for the health and well-being of children. Our physical education program has faced numerous challenges including inactivity among children and families, competing academic priorities, and budget cuts; however, we are focused on providing PE to all students. The middle school years provide a platform for students to focus on their physical activity. Pedometers offer a concrete and comprehensible measure of physical activity. The pedometer would allow me to evaluate students by providing the physical evidence that the student is moving and making an effort to be involved. Motivation is a great incentive, and I believe students tend to be more motivated when they have something to work towards. Unfortunately, the money to purchase pedometers is not available; however, with your help we will continue to build a quality physical education program. These pedometers will allow me to not only evaluate our students but to participate in step challenges throughout the semester, and provide our students with the best PE experience possible. I believe my students deserve the best and I want to give them the same types of positive experiences that I had and this equipment will go a long way in allowing me to do so.
