Stemming the Gap with Hands-on Science

My students need science kits and materials to ignite their love of science.

My Students

My students attend a small rural school with limited resources for STEM and hands-on learning. We are a Title I school where more than 75% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged. Many of my students do not have access to a computer at home and have very little exposure to STEM careers.

My 7th graders are hard workers and are excited to learn.

When given the opportunity to experience something new, my students jump into the activity and flourish. Providing hands-on labs and STEM activities exposes my students to topics and ways of thinking that will not only further their learning, but open up their future possibilities. Motivating and engaging activities like these are proven to help close the achievement gap.

My Project

Using the weather kits, students will experience lightning formation, clouds formation, the movement of air currents, and the greenhouse effect with hand-on models. Students will also measure current weather conditions in order to forecast weather. Also, by allowing the students to explore using the pendulum and Newton's Cradle, the students will learn about kinetic energy, potential energy, force, and motion. My students will further explore energy and motion by building and experimenting with the cable cars and balloon cars.

Through the labs and demonstrations that I will be able to conduct using the new materials, I will be able to provide my students with a variety of experiences in different branches of science.

My students will gain a better knowledge of science and will have more interest in STEM related activities. Being exposed to these experiments may influence the college and career choices of my current students.
