My students need an iPad to learn and explore STEM concepts that will help them create artwork!

My Students

My students often reflect a childhood that many people share when growing up in Queens, NY - they come from self-sacrificing families that immigrated here to work odd jobs and make ends meet, all so they can provide their children with the best of what they can manage. As a result, my students come into school already with an immense responsibility to uphold.

At four years old, my students are expected to meet standards that state they should be reading full sentences, writing personal narratives, and solving math equations, when in reality, most of them are just learning English.

The academic pressure on these young individuals weighs heavy on their shoulders, and in my heart. Yet, they continue to surprise me with the amazing progress they make between September to June. This can only be a testament of their hard work, and the unwavering support from their loved ones.

I hope to empower these kids with different experiences and tools so that they see their responsibility as a noble one, and in turn, uncover their inner superheroes to make their families and community proud!

My Project

While my students are usually content with the materials they have in the art center, I know their imagination craves more. With our technological advances, we are able to watch videos of the class's favorite authors and illustrators sketch familiar characters and create artwork through computerized mediums rather than the typical pen and paper. My students are fascinated by these approaches and always have questions of the possibilities.

As my students watch illustrators work, there is a disconnect when they personally cannot use the materials they see their favorite artists interact with daily.

While these kids sketch and create artwork daily using paper, markers and scissors, there are so many possibilities they can explore if they had the appropriate access.

I am asking for an IPad Pro and Apple Pencil to provide my students with the exposure and opportunity to draw on a new material. I want them to understand that this tablet is more than just a TV - it is an artistic tool with endless possibilities. They will explore STEM concepts as they design and draw on a technological medium. Students will continue to use these STEM concepts to then learn how to transfer their artwork onto the Silhouette Cameo programing. The machine can then cut and manipulate their computerized artwork and bring it to tangible life.

I hope that this project will inspire my students to discover a new way to create art, and have a better understanding how they can use STEM concepts and accessible technology as tools to help them.
