Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students are in special education and learning about STEM connected to the climate and environment. We have school pollinator gardens that the students helped to build so they are able to make science connections more easily since they have a connection to the garden. We have had a lot of devastating weather and students are monitoring environmental changes and assessing the resilience of ecosystems from storms. They are comparing and contrasting the "emotions of the planet" compared to their own emotions. They understand that the planet is experiencing a lot of pain from environmental changes and some places are not recovering. Students will use the emotion squish balls and planet balls to go through scenarios that the planet might be feeling and to identify that emotion for instance happy might be someone planting a flower garden, creating composting beds, providing habitats above ground for pollinators and below ground for worms etc. The use of kinesthetic balls helps to anchor students memories while they are learning about the environment.

Students will be using scientific research data to create artistic representations for the environmental changes that are occurring inspired by the art therapy deck with sustainability.

The environment and climate change as the topic and then they will share their art with the document camera to their peers during presentations.

Students will demonstrate their learning by creating a collaborative and artistic research data mural to demonstrate the "emotions" the earth is going through and things we can do to help make a difference like using more sustainable energy resources like sun, wind and water.
