My Students

"We can only think when we are confronted with problems." John Dewey. In our new STEM class this year, grades 1-5 are problem solving, thinking critically and collaborating through STEM related projects. We have had overwhelmingly positive results of excitement and engagement of students!

This unique learning opportunity, rare in elementary schools, aims to engage students using an interdisciplinary curriculum that encourages inquiry, exploration and hands-on/minds-on learning.

John J. Flynn School has a diverse student population of 370 students, representing over 25 different home languages. Nearly 20% of our students are English Language Learners and over 50% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Students come to my classroom once a week for 45 minutes. Together, we explore the world through the lens of STEM-based inquiry. Students collaborate with one another to engage in hands-on projects, ranging from gardening to computer coding. My STEM students will use Arduinos Kits and Make Makey Kits to explore electrical circuitry and basic programming. These simple invention kits encourage students to develop a "maker's mindset" and promote creative and collaborative learning.

STEM class gives our students the chance to be successful in a non-traditional classroom setting.

The Arduinos and Makey Makey kits will support our goal of engaging every child in inquiry-based learning, a skill that will last a lifetime.
