STEM Environmental Resource Misuse - Create Earth Awareness

My students need 5 more kinds of rock samples, 5 demonstration kits (tectonics, household use, sedimentation, etc. and misc. materials to help form higher level concepts.

My Students

I teach Earth Science, especially Geology, four days a week, 50 minutes a day, to two or three groups of students each year. We start with observation skills, use their bodies as models, do experiments, and handle realia. They also take extensive notes and make diagrams and charts

The students are quite varied as to nationality, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

The range is from impoverished families to middle class, with a balanced mix. They are Euro-American, Afro-American (some recent immigrants), Hispanics, South and East Asians, and just about any other background you can think of. The school district is dirt poor, and the current financial situation in this state has made it much worse. The school is physically rather trashed, but the setting is wonderful with green hills around and places for walking geology field trips. The Hayward Fault (a major fault on the San Andreas fault system) is half a mile away.

My Project

This is my third year teaching Geology in depth. I have a fairly random selection of rocks. I need some samples to fill in holes in the collection. I have test sets but lack scratch plates. I also need better models for plate tectonics and sedimentation, thus their inclusion. I also teach a seven week unit on Fossils every year and my Find-a-Fossil kit is depleted (the students keep what they recover each year), so I included a replacement bucket of matrix.

It is very important for students to learn to conceptualize (among other things).

More than learning facts is what I'm interested in teaching them. The best way to do that is to give the students lots of activities that demonstrate processes and categorization. That is what the items in this project are intended to enable. The most important concept that students can learn is to appreciate that our earth is a place of process and change. It is a key aspect of environmental awareness.
