My Students

Gifted students love giving back to their community and Canine Commandos provides this opportunity for all Brevard County schools to help save dogs and cats lives! Many of these schools are Title 1 and would not have the chance to participate if Commandos was not created as a field trip. Gifted students are overlooked because the focus is on the lowest 25%, so the teachers of the gifted student programs came together to give them [the students] an opportunity to enjoy a project that is sustainable and memorable. Over 2500 students have trained the shelter animals and made changes in their own homes and community.

My Project

Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to volunteer in the community to learn compassion and empathy, as well as help find homes for shelter animals.

Via STEM, the Commandos and EmbarkVet will partner determining if DNA (breed intelligence) impacts the quality/speed of learning basic commands.

The Commandos will swab the dog's mouth, send to Embark for DNA results, take a photo of him, then tally each time a dog responds to a command. A giant wall chart will graph results with researched breeds and intelligence to prove/disprove theory.

Embark's vet, Dr. Chu, will Skype with the Commandos throughout the year for this study.
