Stem Cell Candy Models

Help me give my students candy to make models of the cell for a STEM project.

My Project

One of the benchmarks that I have to teach this year is how scientists use models in order to show things that are too small for the human eye to see. A great way to do this is to build a candy cell model.

Students always remember learning about the cell using a candy model which allows me to flashback to the project later on during the year, and say things such as, "Remember when we built the cell?; what did we use to represent the NUCLEUS?

Answer: A marshmallow Students will use the fruit roll up to represent the cytoplasm, the nerds rope to represent the rough endoplasmic reticulum, the gummy worms to represent the smooth ER, Mike and Ikes to represent Golgi Bodies and a jelly bean to represent mitochondria.

Students love this project, because three fourths of my students come from low socio-economic households, where they may not be given opportunities to learn in manners such as these. I truly love the kids who I am setting up this project for, and I want to provide them with as many fun experiences (which also help them learn) as I can. Middle School is supposed to be fun, but with the tremendous pressures that are entering our society, it isn't always fun. I am trying to make education similar to what it was when I, myself, went through school. Thank you for helping me do this.
