This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a neighborhood charter school in Oklahoma City. We serve 330 students in Pre-K through 5th grade. 90% of our students are below the poverty line and receive free and reduced lunches. Our demographics include 88% African-American, 10% Hispanic, 1% Asian, and 1% white.
Above are the statistic about my kids, but they are more than just statistics.
My kids are business leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, singers, dancers, comedians and teachers. They possess a grit and determination that is unseen in many adults, and they know that lessons learned from failing are more valuable than money.
We are led by a principal who is visible, engaged, and invested in every aspect of success for my kids. She fosters the idea that no matter what your background, you have a chance to make it better through education. She believes that empowering our students with experiences will make them the problem solvers of tomorrow.
My Project
Books are the windows to the world and my students need more of them. More importantly, they need books that introduce, invite and engage their minds to create using STEAM, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
It is impossible stop the energy that is flowing in My Magnificent classroom.
My students are becoming future world changers and things will never be the same. I am asking for thirteen books including One Grain Of Rice: A Mathematical Folktale; Iggy Peck, Architect; and Ada Twist, Scientist. These books are a wonderful way to bring new and innovative ideas to my kids. Not only will they be improving their reading skills, they will have a chance to implement the ideas they read about.
Recently, our school opened a "Thinker Space" room for students to use in order to explore and create in a safe environment. The books I am requesting will allow my students to expand on the knowledge they currently have and create things with purpose for our school, community and the world.
