Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students with intellectual disabilities and behavior challenges benefit from structured, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences. In inclusive physical education (PE) settings, where students of diverse abilities learn together, it is essential to implement strategies that promote positive behavior, engagement, and skill development.

This proposal outlines how manipulatives can serve as powerful behavior reinforcers while enhancing the overall teaching-learning experience in inclusive PE environments.

Students with intellectual disabilities often respond well to hands-on, sensory-based learning. They benefit from immediate and meaningful reinforcement as well as require structured opportunities to practice self-regulation and social skills, and visual/concrete materials are great resources. When appropriately integrated, STEAM manipulatives can function in many good ways like positive behavior reinforcers, engagement tools, skill-building resources and social interaction facilitators.

STEAM manipulatives can serve as behavior reinforcers because they are immediate and tangible reinforcement with a "hands-on materials" approach such as: building blocks, movement-based coding games, target engineering stations, balance and design challenges. Providing immediate feedback and visible results strengthens motivation and reinforces our work as educators on classroom expectations such as following directions, waiting for a turn, demonstrating safe body control, completing a task and so on. This will allow us to get those healthy classroom behaviors and then focus on other academic skills.

In conclusion, integrating STEAM manipulatives into inclusive physical education is not simply an academic enhancement strategy—it is a behavior support approach grounded in engagement, structure, and meaningful reinforcement. For students with intellectual disabilities and behavior challenges, hands-on, purposeful materials create opportunities to experience success, develop independence, build social skills, and ultimately strengthen healthy behavior patterns.
