Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are between the ages of 4-5. For most of them, this is their first experience being in a school setting. We not only teach them early literacy, math, science, and social study skills, but we also teach them how to be independent, to recognize and regulate emotions, how to get along with others, and so much more.

Like all of us, this year has been extremely difficult.

A big part of our curriculum is learning through play. This helps them learn how to interact with others, how to share materials, and to problem solve. Unfortunately, they are not allowed to share materials or be too close to each other. We have many amazing resources that they are not allowed to use and interact with due to the ongoing social distancing procedures.

Even through all this, they arrive at school and log-in every day excited to see what new topic they will get to learn. They are extremely creative and inspire me to continue finding ways for them to have the best learning experiences and persevere at high levels while also being safe.

My Project

We are living, teaching, and learning through difficult times. The concept of needing to keep 6-feet apart, keep masks on, do not share materials, etc. are difficult for us all, but especially for children that are 4-years old. They do not understand the concept of social distancing, global pandemic, etc. These materials will allow my students to keep their materials separate from their friends and keep each other safe. Having a specific bin for their math, reading, and science materials will help them understand boundaries while also seeing that we are all still able to learn and grow together. These bins will allow our students to gain independence. They will know exactly where their individual materials are, and they will be mobile to be able to go where they go.

In Pre-k, we learn about rhyming words, beginning sounds, and concepts of print.

These are a few things the highlighter tape will help me point out. I can highlight rhyming words, beginning sounds, and ending sounds. It will also be used by students. They will be able to come up to a text one by one and highlight that week’s focus letter.

Like stated earlier, a big goal in pre-k is fostering independence. Another big goal is for the students to recognize their name and be able to write it. The pocket charts will help us combine both. The pocket charts will be used to organize the students and their different centers. Each student will need to be able to recognize their name to see which activity they need to complete that day. This will also eliminate the need for them to ask questions on what to do next.
